A troupe of belly dancers had their performance cut off prematurely as the vehicle moved past the startled dignitaries in the reviewing area, while some confused onlookers applauded the fire service, mistaking their appearance for a part of the parade.
A group of teenagers spotted the flames gathering strength on a small peninsula jutting off Bray head and immediately alerted the emergency services.
At first they asked to speak to an adult. I don't think they believed us,' said one of them. But when nobody arrived after ten minutes, we rang again.
